The pearl of West End

The Brisbane café scene is a competitive area, with eateries and coffee shops dotted all around the city offering a beautiful and varied range of cuisines and beverages for its patrons. West End, situated to the west of Brisbane’s CBD, features a wide choice of cafes surrounded by antique stores and little kitsch independent retailers, often delivering some of the fussiest customers to its doors. One of these cafes is Pearl Café, a retro styled, decadent little bistro tucked away on Logan Road in Woolloongabba, housed in one of the oldest buildings in Brisbane.

The exquisite modern edge on the traditional decor at Pearl Cafe.

The café offers meals for every time of the day, from hearty breakfasts and delicate brunches to fresh lunches and delicious dinners. Breakfast and brunch options include gems like crepes with chocolate ganache and a ploughman’s lunch on a big slab of wood. Pearl Café is also a bar, offering beverages of all kinds, all the time.

Pearl Café also has style and charm in the bucket loads. Their staff are friendly and forgiving. In my party, one of us accidently got the wrong meal. However, the staff said we could keep it to “tide us over” while they made the correct meal, without paying any extra. However, be prepared to wait a while, the bistro can get very busy on the weekends making service a little slower.

The room shows off its roots with bare brick, paper straws and vintage mirrors, while still looking contemporary, offering comfortable chairs, a beautiful bar and modern styling. The interior’s traditionally sombre brick walls have been recharged with trendy lighting and lots of mirrors, opening up the tiny space. Or for those after some fresh air, the tables outside offer the perfect perch for people watching on any lazy afternoon or bright morning.

Perhaps the only downside is the wait for a table. Pearl Café is a very popular spot but is also quite small. This often results in a long time standing around, particularly on the weekends, but, if you are savvy enough, you can reserve a table in advance and avoid the wait altogether.

However, Pearl Café is a great little retro bistro with delicious food and friendly atmosphere. You can visit the bistro at 28 Logan Road in Woolloongabba for breakfast, lunch or dinner from Tuesday to Saturday every week. To book a table, call Pearl Café on (07) 3392 3300 during business hours.
